Relationship Coaching Certification by Terry Real

Our relationship coach certification is grounded in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), the method created by Terry Real. Terry is an internationally recognized family therapist, New York Times bestselling author, and founder of the Relational Life Institute. For more than four decades, he has helped couples move through entrenched conflict and build more honest, connected relationships.

At the Relational Life Institute, we made a conscious choice to welcome coaches into our certification program alongside therapists. We believe coaches have an important role to play in helping people transform how they relate. Whether you support individuals, couples, or families, this program gives you a clear method, guided practice, and the confidence to expand the relationship work you can offer.

When you are ready to see how the full learning journey comes together, explore the relationship coach certification curriculum, requirements, and application process.

When insight is not enough

Give clients a clear way forward and help them create real change

The RLT relationship coach certification is professional training that helps coaches develop structured skills for working with relationship patterns, conflict, boundaries, accountability, and connection. Designed as a relational coach certification grounded in the RLT method, it combines live practice, mentoring, and assessed work with real clients.

Your clients may already understand their patterns. They may even know what they “should” do differently. RLT helps you work with the gap between insight and action, so sessions can move from talking about change toward practicing a new way of relating.

Who it is for

For professionals who help relationships thrive

You do not need to be a therapist or hold a mental-health degree. Our relationship coach certification is designed for professionals who already coach clients and want a more robust way to work with relational dynamics.

New to coaching? You may still apply if you have regular access to appropriate clients for practice and Case Review.

Couples coaches

Strengthen your couples coaching with a clear method for helping partners work through recurring conflict, disconnection, trust, repair, and different visions for their relationship.

Marriage coaches

Parenting and family coaches

Apply relational principles to boundaries, accountability, connection, and the patterns that shape family life.

Help people recognize patterns, communicate more clearly, and move through high-stakes transitions. This may include family mediators, collaborative-divorce professionals, and family-law professionals when coaching is part of their role.

Healthcare and other helping professionals

Why RLT is different

A practical method for the moments that feel hardest

While many approaches focus mainly on communication techniques or individual insight, RLT works with the relationship as a living system. It brings repeating patterns and power imbalances into view, connects present-day reactions to the protective strategies beneath them, and supports each person in taking compassionate accountability. Clients do not just understand what is happening. They practice the skills for repair, intimacy, and lasting change in the room.

See the pattern

Understand what keeps repeating

Look beneath the presenting problem and recognize the protective behaviors that maintain conflict, distance, or mistrust.

Create movement

Balance honesty with compassion

Help clients see their part in a dynamic while protecting dignity, connection, and the possibility of change.

Build new skills

Practice a different way of relating

Teach communication, boundaries, repair, self-respect, and connection skills clients can use beyond the session.

The future you are building

Create more possibilities for your work and your life

Build the confidence to support a wider range of clients and create a professional path with more choice in how, where, and with whom you work.

Broaden the work you can offer

Build the skills to support individuals and couples, so you can expand beyond an individual-only practice when that direction fits your goals.

Create a more flexible way of working

Design services that can be offered online, in person, or through a hybrid model, where your role, insurance, and local requirements permit.

Shape a practice around your values

Use a defined method and professional credential as a foundation for clearer positioning, whether you build a private practice, work independently, or within an established organization.

Meet complex moments with confidence

Move beyond simply mediating the same conversation. Learn how to recognize the pattern, guide meaningful accountability, and help clients practice new skills.

Certification can strengthen capability and professional positioning; it does not guarantee clients, referrals, income, fee increases, or business results.

What RLT coaches say

From uncertainty to a clearer way of helping

Confidence grows when a practitioner has a structure they can understand, practice, and bring into the room.

“I have been working as a relationship and sexuality coach for the past six years... the certification training brought my understanding and practice of RLT to an entirely different level. It was rich, versatile, and profoundly meaningful. And beyond the professional growth, RLT changed my personal life!”
Aleksandra M.
“Sometimes in life we are presented with opportunities that sell a sizzle only to find there is no steak… you are serving far more than I anticipated and I wanted to thank you.”
Deb H.
“I am continually amazed at your generosity! Enrolling with RLT has been absolutely the rightest thing to do... I count myself blessed to have found RLT!”
Bistra V.

Relational Life Institute is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7495). Practicums 1 and 2 each currently provide 23 continuing education hours to certification students. Frequently asked questions

What to know before you take the next step

What does a relationship coach do?

A relationship coach helps clients understand recurring relational patterns, strengthen communication and boundaries, navigate conflict, and practice more effective ways of connecting. Coaching is not psychotherapy and does not include diagnosing or treating mental-health conditions.

How can I become an RLT Certified Relational Coach?

Start by submitting the short application with your professional background and experience. The RLI enrollment team reviews your application and confirms whether the certification fits your background and goals. If accepted, you will be invited to a personal call to review the certification and your study path, followed by an invitation to enroll. You will then receive welcome information and access to begin onboarding and self-study.

What are the requirements for relationship coach certification?

The RLT pathway includes approximately 150 hours of learning and practice, RLT Levels 1–3, at least one approved Couples Experiential or Intensive, two 24-hour live practicums, six Small Group Mentoring sessions, access to appropriate real clients, and a faculty-reviewed Case Review. Live practicums and mentoring require full attendance.

Who can apply for this certification?

The program is designed for professionals who coach clients across disciplines. You do not need a therapy license or a graduate degree in mental health. Applicants need appropriate access to real clients for practice, mentoring, and Case Review.

Can a divorce lawyer, nurse practitioner, or other helping professional apply?

Potentially, when coaching is part of the person’s work and they can meet the real-client requirements within their professional scope. The credential does not expand anyone’s legal role or permit psychotherapy.

Do I need previous experience working with couples?

No. Previous couples experience can help, but it is not required. You do need regular access to appropriate real clients so you can integrate the method and complete your Case Review.

Can I certify if I currently work only with individuals?

Yes. Passing with an individual client leads to Individuals Only; passing with a couple leads to Couples & Individuals. These are assessment outcomes within one pathway, not separate programs.

Is this relationship coach certification online?

It uses a hybrid format: flexible, self-paced course content plus scheduled live practicums, mentoring, faculty calls, and support sessions.

How long does certification take?

The program includes approximately 150 hours of learning and practice. A typical planning range is 12–18 months, with 18 months of program access.

How is my work assessed?

Your final Case Review includes one 30–40 minute recording or two 15–20 minute recordings of real-client work, plus a brief written case conceptualization. Faculty assess your use of the model, skills, presence, use of self, and reflective ability.

What real-client work will I need?

You need regular access to appropriate real clients. Friends, relatives, peers, and other students do not substitute for required client work. Informed client consent is required, and professional liability insurance is required by the final Case Review and listing stage.

What happens after I graduate?

Graduates retain lifetime access to the certification courses included in their enrollment and their selected elective. They also receive one free year in the separate RLI Alumni program.

Is the complete certification ICF-accredited?

No. The program leads to an RLT professional credential and should not be represented as an ICF-accredited certification.

Are continuing education hours available?

RLI is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7495). Practicums 1 and 2 each currently provide 23 continuing education hours to certification students. Confirm acceptance with your own board or professional body.

Course Description

RLT Decoded: Real Sessions, Real Decisions is an 8-week live online training for practitioners working with couples. Participants observe the complete arc of Relational Life Therapy (RLT) conducted by Terry Real, LICSW, with one couple across a two-day intensive. Each class includes approximately 50–60 minutes of unedited therapy footage, followed by live clinical teaching and Q&A with Desirae Ysasi, LPC-S, RLI Director of Training. Desirae deconstructs the clinical choices, timing, and reasoning behind each intervention — providing participants with a direct framework for applying RLT in their own practice. Topics include: RLT intake and contracting, love avoidance, inner child work, Family of Origin mapping, multigenerational trauma, and race and cultural context in couples therapy.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants can expect to:

  1. Identify the two clinical types of love avoidance and their different origins.
  2. Explain the sequencing of inner child visualization work conducted with one partner in the presence of the other.
  3. Articulate how to introduce race, cultural context, and sexual identity as clinical material in couples therapy.
  4. Understand the difference between minority stress adaptation and Adaptive Child responses.
  5. Explain the clinical indicators for judicious self-disclosure in RLT couples therapy, including criteria for depth of disclosure and return of focus to the client.
  6. Identify LGBTQ+-affirming clinical considerations in couples therapy, including how to recognize heteronormative assumptions.
  7. Recognize how multigenerational transmission of shame influences clients’ reactive behaviors in their intimate relationships.
  8. Explain the concept of False Empowerment in childhood and how it impacts clients’ present-day relationships.
  9. Describe the difference between experiential and non-experiential inner child work, and when to apply each.
  10. Identify blatant/latent power dynamics within couples.
  11. Explain how to create a contract with your couples at the beginning of the work to establish safety and readiness.
  12. Identify two relational skills to teach clients to help them deepen their connection between and after the work has completed.
  13. Describe how to identify the deeper, repeating pattern between a couple that underlies the presenting problem.
  14. Explain the 3 parts of the psyche in Relational Life Therapy and the function of each in a client’s present-day relationships.
  15. Describe the three Family Roles clients play and how they reveal themselves in adult relationships.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain deeper competency in and be able to:

Coach conflict-avoidant couples to embrace health conflict, negotiate, and ask for what they want.

Help highly-defended clients reconnect to their emotions.

Conduct inner child work in the presence of the partner – identifying when experiential or non-experiential work is indicated.

Identify the deeper, repeating pattern that clients need to address that underlies their presenting problems.

Course Content: Couples Intensives offer a powerful, accelerated pathway for relational healing—but only when they are held with clarity, structure, and skilled relational authority. This advanced professional training is designed to support relationship therapists and coaches in leading Couples Intensives grounded explicitly in the Relational Life Therapy (RLT) model.

Across five live, 90-minute modules, participants will learn how to thoughtfully assess readiness for Intensive work (both client and clinician), design and structure Intensives using the three phases of RLT, and intervene effectively in high-stakes relational moments. Emphasis will be placed on therapist stance, pacing, accountability, and the Wise Adult leadership required to hold couples through deep emotional work without losing clarity or care.

Through didactic teaching, case vignettes, and live dialogue-based Q&A, this course will walk participants through the full arc of an RLT Couples Intensive—from initial assessment and Phase 1 joining, through Inner Child work, into sustained Wise Adult integration and post-Intensive follow-up. Practical considerations such as fee-setting, structuring Intensive days, post-Intensive care, and clinician self-care will also be addressed to support both impact and sustainability.

This course is designed specifically for relationship professionals who are trained in or actively using Relational Life Therapy and who wish to offer Intensive therapy experiences for couples or other romantic relationship structures. The content will focus exclusively on Couples Intensives through the RLT lens and will not address Intensive work with individuals, families, or non-romantic relationship systems.

Participants should expect an advanced-level training that assumes familiarity with core RLT concepts and invites deeper clinical discernment, relational accountability, and professional responsibility in this powerful modality.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants can expect to:

  1. Assess readiness for offering RLT Couples Intensives
  2. Evaluate clinician preparedness, ethical considerations, and client appropriateness for Intensive work, including when an Intensive is indicated—and when it is not—through an RLT lens.
  3. Design and structure a Couples Intensive grounded in the RLT model
  4. Apply the three phases of Relational Life Therapy—Joining Through the Truth, Inner Child work, and Skill-Building—to create a coherent, intentional Intensive experience.
  5. Manage and lead Intensives with relational authority and clarity
  6. Effectively move through Phase 1 by establishing connection, accountability, and truth-telling by accurately identifying relational patterns, confronting losing strategies, and aligning both partners around shared goals for the Intensive.
  7. Demonstrate deep Inner Child work and Wise Adult integration in an Intensive format
  8. Intervene effectively in Phases 2 and 3 by working with relational wounds, working with the Adaptive Child, repairing marital ruptures, teaching relational skills to use from the Wise Adult part of the self, and supporting partners in sustained intimate connection .
  9. Measure practical and ethical considerations to support impact and sustainability
  10. Determine appropriate fees, structure Intensive days, plan post-Intensive follow-up care, and engage in clinician self-care practices to reduce burnout and support long-term effectiveness.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain deeper competency in and be able to:

  •  Structure a course of intensive treatment for a couple incorporating all three 3 phases of the Relational Life Therapy model.
  • Identify which clients are suitable for intensive work and how to assess their readiness and appropriateness of the model.
  • How to pace intensives to ensure the sustainability of the work for both clients and practitioners.

Course Description

Terry Real presents RLI’s introductory training course, Relational Life Therapy Level 1.

Over five recorded classes you’ll be introduced to the powerful principals behind Relational Life Therapy (RLT) as taught by Terry Real. RLT Level 1 is designed to give you an in-depth introduction to the theory and practice of the RLT model.

During this course, students will discover the differences between RLT and traditional psychodynamic therapy. Also considered are the stances of “one-down shame” and “one-up grandiosity” in couples; according to RLT, true intimacy can only happen when partners are “same-as” with each other. RLT is about action and lasting results, helping people to make major changes to the negative parts of their character, and the critical role and stance of the therapist is described. Presented also are the concepts of Relational Mindfulness, Joining Through The Truth, and psychological patriarchy.

RLT Level 1 is the first step toward RLT certification and will prepare you for the Level 2 & 3 trainings to deepen your understanding of Relational Life Therapy.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants can expect to:

  1. Compare the RLT phases and how RLT differs from traditional therapy.
  2. Describe the role and approach of the practitioner in RLT.
  3. Diagnose the RLT view of power imbalances in couples, of psychological patriarchy, and how these are addressed through therapy.
  4. Summarize Relational Mindfulness and the “fight, flight, fix” responses.
  5. Describe the role and approach of the therapist in RLT.
  6. Explain the two types of leverage.
  7. Discuss the concept of appropriate discrepancy and how it works with neuroplasticity.
  8. List the 8 diagnostic lenses in RLT.
  9. Interpret how preconditions are addressed in RLT.
  10. Compare the two types of boundaries.
  11. Demonstrate strategies for empowering latent clients.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain deeper competency in and be able to:

  • Illustrate that true intimacy can only happen when partners are “same-as” – neither one-up nor one-down.
  • Discuss how RLT practitioners will confront and teach their clients how to live relationally.
  • Hypothesize how RLT practitioners use judicious self-disclosure, sharing stories of they use these same skills in their own relationships.
