A Note From Terry

Welcome!

RLT Level 3 is finally here! The incredible faculty and I have put our hearts and souls into this training, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with you.

This is where you take your understanding of the RLT model to an even deeper level. You will strengthen your use of the RLT stances, including when and how to use them to get even more profound, faster results in your sessions.

During 3 LIVE calls, you will watch me work with a live volunteer couple, review stances and skills with video clips and demonstrations, and have the chance to ask me questions directly. You’ll also receive lifetime access to the call recordings (excluding the couple demo due to privacy reasons), so don’t worry if you can’t make the live dates.

You will also access 5 hours of pre-recorded training where you’ll explore the ecological perspective of RLT and refine your skills in working with some of the most difficult resistance that presents in therapy sessions, including grandiose women.

This training is exclusively for those who have completed both RLT Level 1 and 2. RLT Level 3 is for therapists and coaches looking to take their RLT understanding and application to the highest level—and it’s essential if you want to become an RLT certified therapist or practitioner and join our incredible referral network.

By the end of this training, you will:

See you on the first call.

Warmly,

Here’s Everything You Get in RLT Level 3

3 Recorded Calls With Terry Real

Over 5.5 hours together, Terry will discuss the nuances of RLT Phases 1 and 2, explore the RLT stances, and showcase the most important skills of Phase 3. You will review sections of sessions, with commentary from Terry on the particular stances and skills that he’s utilizing.

One Couple Demonstration

On the second live call, you will watch Terry work with a couple to witness how he uses the different stances.

5 Training Modules (Pre-recorded)

Explore topics including Family of Origin work, the RLT ecological perspective, and stances in greater depth to expand and refine your skills and cement your confidence in your abilities.

Lifetime Access to all Course Material

You’ll receive access to our private membership site on July 15 (two weeks prior to the live calls) where you can work through the pre-recorded elements and build connections with the faculty and your fellow students. After the live calls, you will also have lifetime access to the call recordings (excluding the couple demo for privacy reasons) to watch back as often as you wish.

Course Description

RLT Decoded: Real Sessions, Real Decisions is an 8-week live online training for practitioners working with couples. Participants observe the complete arc of Relational Life Therapy (RLT) conducted by Terry Real, LICSW, with one couple across a two-day intensive. Each class includes approximately 50–60 minutes of unedited therapy footage, followed by live clinical teaching and Q&A with Desirae Ysasi, LPC-S, RLI Director of Training. Desirae deconstructs the clinical choices, timing, and reasoning behind each intervention — providing participants with a direct framework for applying RLT in their own practice. Topics include: RLT intake and contracting, love avoidance, inner child work, Family of Origin mapping, multigenerational trauma, and race and cultural context in couples therapy.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants can expect to:

  1. Identify the two clinical types of love avoidance and their different origins.
  2. Explain the sequencing of inner child visualization work conducted with one partner in the presence of the other.
  3. Articulate how to introduce race, cultural context, and sexual identity as clinical material in couples therapy.
  4. Understand the difference between minority stress adaptation and Adaptive Child responses.
  5. Explain the clinical indicators for judicious self-disclosure in RLT couples therapy, including criteria for depth of disclosure and return of focus to the client.
  6. Identify LGBTQ+-affirming clinical considerations in couples therapy, including how to recognize heteronormative assumptions.
  7. Recognize how multigenerational transmission of shame influences clients’ reactive behaviors in their intimate relationships.
  8. Explain the concept of False Empowerment in childhood and how it impacts clients’ present-day relationships.
  9. Describe the difference between experiential and non-experiential inner child work, and when to apply each.
  10. Identify blatant/latent power dynamics within couples.
  11. Explain how to create a contract with your couples at the beginning of the work to establish safety and readiness.
  12. Identify two relational skills to teach clients to help them deepen their connection between and after the work has completed.
  13. Describe how to identify the deeper, repeating pattern between a couple that underlies the presenting problem.
  14. Explain the 3 parts of the psyche in Relational Life Therapy and the function of each in a client’s present-day relationships.
  15. Describe the three Family Roles clients play and how they reveal themselves in adult relationships.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain deeper competency in and be able to:

Coach conflict-avoidant couples to embrace health conflict, negotiate, and ask for what they want.

Help highly-defended clients reconnect to their emotions.

Conduct inner child work in the presence of the partner – identifying when experiential or non-experiential work is indicated.

Identify the deeper, repeating pattern that clients need to address that underlies their presenting problems.
